9th June

Hong Kong Kowloon Water Works.

1904.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No.18279/1904 of the 1st of June relating to the Kowloon Water Works.

2. A copy of your letter was sent to Mr Chadwick and 9th June/04. I now enclose a copy of a report which we have received

from him in reply. You will see that he has conferred with Mr Chatham.

3. With regard to the 3rd paragraph of your letter we have discussed the matter with Mr Chadwick, and he points out that the increase of section which he has approved does not necessitate the raising of the dam. He considers, as indicated in the concluding sentence of his letter of the 2nd of May, that the dam should first be completed to the originally proposed level. The decision as to further raising it can then be taken having regard to existing circumstances. The important point is by now increasing the section to render it possible and safe to raise the dam at any future time when desired.

I have the honour to be

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
